Meet The Gang

From a small start we have managed to acrue a wide variety of farm livestock, pets and hangers-on at Rock HQ. As we have limited ground, shambolic fencing and gaps where gates should be all the critters tend to be free range, some are long range when they wander off into the wilderness, but mostly they loiter with intent around the cottage and out buildings hoping to mug one of us for extra rations. We only have one rule, everything and everyone must be friendly.

Not all creatures great and small are edible, some are pets, dogs, cats, horses, most livestock start off being edible but achieve pet status and others arrive here as pet rescue.

Here are some of the pets, livestock with pet status and pet rescue critters currently enjoying a life of luxury at Rock HQ.

Feeding this lot is an expensive business, I sometimes think we might as well just stuff money in their mouths, and then there are the vets bills, bedding and housing, it all adds up but we never turn a rescue away unless its reptilian, arachnid or alien.

Critters

Apollo

Apollo the Gipsy Cob

Apollo

We have had Apollo since he was knee high to a grasshopper, a pretty boy Gypsy cob with blue eyes and a soft head. Totally laid back, placid and friendly Apollo will one day make a very good driving pony, until that time he spends his time eating, sleeping and avoiding the amorous attentions of Thor the Boar.

Trevor aka The Pocket Rocket

Trevor aka The Pocket Rocket

Trevor

Trevor is a Shetland pony with small horse syndrome, he rules his universe, everything is either his, edible or for mating with. Many a times he has caught one of us unawares from behind as he attempts to pass on his genes. Victims have included sheep, other ponies twice his size, Bernese Mountain Dogs and wheelbarrows. Nicknamed the Pocket Rocket due to his Exocet like turn of speed this beast is often found lurking in the undergrowth ready to pounce on the unwary. He is totally adorable, changes colour three times a year and has highlights most women envy. One day he will be used to pull a small cart, as in one day when we can afford the medical insurance and find someone brave (or stupid) to tether him to an appliance with wheels.

Lil Misty

Lil Misty

Lil Misty

Misty is also a Shetland pony who has heels of steel and and the explosive temper of an Icelandic Volcano. Lil Misty is the only critter at Rock HQ who can quell Trevor’s ardour (usually with a back kick in the farmers) and keeps him in check. She is tiny, being some 33 inches tall we have dogs bigger than her. Misty also has the same outlook on life as Eeyore and moves about as fast as a comatose sloth in a crisis.

Thor

Thor

Thor

Thor the Boar is a Mangalitza, which is a very rare breed, and Thor is rarer than most as he is a swallow belly meaning he is black on his upper surfaces and white underneath. He is also totally uninterested in female Mangalitzas, preferring to roam the smallholding like an out of work bouncer and annoying other residents. he does have one special friend, Apollo the pretty boy and more often than not Thor can be found trying to win Apollo’s favour. This has called into question Thor’s sexuality as well as his eyesight.

William

William

William

William is a Welsh cob cross who chose us to be his minders when we wandered too close to a stable in 2007. He is stubborn, moody, and in his own head King of the Hill, he is also stunningly good natured when he wants to be, just when you think he should be introduced to the inside of a tin can he does something to redeem himself, like not bite. Definitely the leader of the equine gang he is the instigator of breakouts, runaways and food fights. A very handsome intelligent boy he is a forever friend and Rock HQ would not be without him.
